  • Duty to Report: As registered nurses, we are legally required to report certain concerns to protect you and the community. This includes situations such as suspected child abuse or neglect, abuse of vulnerable adults, unsafe healthcare practices, or other risks to safety. Reports are made only when required by law and limited to the necessary information.

By working with us, you can trust that your health information is protected, and your safety is always a priority.

Safety and Emergency Response

1. Nurse Responsibility

  • Registered Nurses are trained to assess client health and safety.

  • If, during a visit, the nurse determines that a client’s condition is life-threatening or poses an immediate risk to health or safety, the nurse is obligated to act in the client’s best interest.

2. Calling Emergency Services

  • If a nurse is concerned that a client requires urgent medical attention, 911 or local emergency services will be contacted immediately.

  • This may include, but is not limited to, concerns such as:

    • Chest pain or suspected heart attack

    • Difficulty breathing or severe respiratory distress

    • Loss of consciousness

    • Signs of stroke

    • Severe bleeding or injury

    • Any other sudden change in condition that requires emergency intervention

3. Client/Guardian Notification

  • Whenever possible, the nurse will explain the situation to the client (or their parent/guardian) before contacting emergency services.

  • If the client is unable to communicate or provide consent due to their condition, emergency services will be called immediately in order to protect the client’s health and safety.

4. Continuity of Care

  • The nurse will provide relevant health information to emergency responders to support safe and effective care.

  • Following the event, the nurse will document the incident and notify the client’s healthcare provider (e.g., physician, nurse practitioner) as appropriate.

5. Client Acknowledgement

  • By receiving services from Vampire Nurse on Wheels, clients acknowledge that nurses may contact emergency services without prior consent if they believe it is necessary to protect the client’s health or safety.

Legal and Professional Obligation

Nurses have a legal and ethical obligation to report situations that may place clients or the public at risk of harm. This duty applies regardless of client consent and may override privacy and confidentiality when safety is at stake.

Circumstances Requiring a Report:

  • A report will be made to the appropriate authority in the following circumstances, including but not limited to:

  • Child Protection: If there are reasonable grounds to suspect that a child is at risk of abuse or neglect, a report will be made to Family and Children’s Services, as required by the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA).

  • Abuse of Vulnerable Adults: Concerns regarding abuse, neglect, or unsafe care of a client in a long-term care home or retirement home will be reported under the Long-Term Care Homes Act or Retirement Homes Act.

  • Unsafe Healthcare Providers: If another healthcare provider is believed to be practicing unsafely, is incompetent, or is impaired, a report may be made to their regulatory body (e.g., CNO, CPSO).

  • Other Legal Requirements: Reports may also be made in cases of certain communicable diseases, fitness to drive concerns, or other mandatory reporting requirements under Ontario law.

How Reports Are Made:

Reports will be made in good faith to the appropriate agency, regulatory college, or authority. Information disclosed will be limited to what is necessary to meet the legal obligation.

Client Communication

Wherever possible and appropriate, clients will be informed if a report is being made. However, in urgent or legally mandated situations, reports may need to be made without prior client notification.

Accountability

All staff and nurses working with Vampire Nurse on Wheels are expected to understand and uphold the duty to report requirements. Failure to comply with these obligations may result in professional and legal consequences.
